Government Unveils Ambitious Eco-Incentives Plan for Auto Sector Overhaul

In a significant development, a meeting was convened today at Palazzo Piacentini in Rome, the headquarters of the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy. The gathering, known as the Automotive Table, was chaired by Minister Urso, and it served as the platform for unveiling the details of the Prime Ministerial Decree aimed at reshaping incentives for the purchase of vehicles with low polluting emissions (Ecobonus).

The attendees included Deputy Minister Valentino Valentini, Undersecretary Fausta Bergamotto, representatives from Italian vehicle manufacturers, trade unions, employers' organizations in the supply chain, regional representatives, and Anfia.

Minister Urso opened the proceedings by highlighting the key innovations of Ecobonus 2024, which earmarks a substantial 950 million euros to incentivize the purchase of low-emission vehicles. A notable addition is a scrapping contribution tied to the environmental class of the discarded vehicle, including the option to scrap Euro 5 vehicles. In 2024, the maximum scrapping contribution for a Euro 2 vehicle will surge from 5,000 to 13,750 EUR.

The allocation of the 2024 Ecobonus resources is as follows: 793 million for cars; 35 million for mopeds, motorcycles, quadricycles; 53 million for light commercial vehicles; 20 million for used cars; and 50 million for an experimental long-term rental program.

Furthermore, the meeting delved into the 2024 incentive program designed for the purchase and installation of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles at homes.

The Automotive Roundtable also provided a platform for updates on the progress of various working groups established by the Automotive Development Roundtable (Stellantis Roundtable). These groups focus on critical aspects such as Market, Competitiveness, Components, Work and Skills, and R&D and engineering centers.

Minister Adolfo Urso emphasized, "This new incentive plan for the automotive sector rests on three pillars: the modernization of the Italian car fleet, support for lower-income individuals, and the revitalization of vehicle production in Italy. This approach signals a necessary shift from previous years towards greater ecological and social sustainability, with special consideration for low-income families and domestic supply chain businesses, integral to our Made in Italy initiative."

In a noteworthy aside, Minister Adolfo Urso engaged with logistics workers from the Stellantis plant in Melfi. This interaction took place earlier in the day outside the Department of Business and Made in Italy headquarters.
